Lancering Cooking of Longing Podcast

Cook­ing of Long­ing is een gelu­id­spro­ject van de Mex­i­caanse gelu­id­skun­ste­naar en soci­oloog Eli Guer­rero, waarin de verbind­ing tussen eten, herin­ner­ing en iden­titeit wordt onder­zocht. Aan de hand van meeslepende kookre­cepten in audio wordt vast­gelegd hoe smak­en en eten een gevoel van ver­bon­den­heid creëren voor mensen die naar Ned­er­land zijn gemigreerd.

De audio serie vol­gt 7 kook­liefheb­bers geves­tigd in Ams­ter­dam Zuidoost ter­wi­jl zij de keuken induiken om de smak­en van thuis opnieuw te creëren. Het project is samengesteld uit gelu­id­sop­names die in het voor­jaar van 2026 zijn gemaakt en brengt de recepten, herin­ner­in­gen en ver­halen samen van Luba, Ted­dy, Esther, Don­na Lee, Dor­cas, Ramzi en Jehad.

De lancering

Op 10 sep­tem­ber nodi­gen we je uit om samen met ons de lancer­ing van de audioserie Cook­ing of Long­ing te vieren. Tij­dens deze avond kri­jg je als eerste de recepten te horen en een voor­proe­f­je van het bijbe­horende kook­boek. En natu­urlijk is er ook iets te proeven.

Kom en beleef een avond vol gelu­id, eten, herin­ner­in­gen en ver­halen van thuis.

Over het project

Eli Guer­rero (www.eliguerrero.nl) is een Mex­i­caanse kun­ste­naar die werkt vanu­it Mex­i­co en Ams­ter­dam. Haar werk richt zich op locatiege­bon­den en com­mu­ni­ty-based gelu­id­spro­jecten waarin ver­halen vertellen, eten, iden­titeit en bio-akoestiek cen­traal staan. Ze is lid van het Straten­mak­ers Audio Col­lec­tief in Ams­ter­dam en medeo­prichter van Radio Coci­na Colab­o­ra­to­rio in Mexico.

Cook­ing of Long­ing is ontstaan vanu­it Eli’s eigen ervar­ing met migratie. Ams­ter­dam Zuidoost was haar eerste thuis in Ned­er­land. Daar ont­moette ze een gemeen­schap van mensen met soort­gelijke ervarin­gen: mensen die proberen de smak­en van thuis, die ze mis­sen, opnieuw te creëren. Het project brengt deze culi­naire ont­moetin­gen, die plaatsvin­den in de keukens van mensen thuis, in beeld en geluid.

De koks

Luba is een Mex­i­caanse kun­ste­naar die in 2016 samen met haar fam­i­lie naar Ned­er­land ver­huis­de. Sinds­di­en woont ze in Kraai­ennest, waar ze haar weg vin­dt in het Ned­er­landse lev­en en tegelijk­er­ti­jd haar passie voor eten opnieuw heeft ontdekt.

Ted­dy Lyon is een Zuid-Afrikaanse heal­er, kun­ste­naar en activist die al twaalf jaar in Ned­er­land woont. Hij vond een thuis in Reigers­bos, waar hij graag kookt en maalti­j­den deelt met vrienden.

Esther, oor­spronke­lijk afkom­stig uit Curaçao, woont al 40 jaar in Ned­er­land. Haar huis in de buurt van Ganzen­hof is een vertrouwde ont­moet­ingsplek voor fam­i­lie en vrien­den, die er komen geni­eten van authen­tieke Antil­li­aans-Cre­oolse gerechten.

Don­na Lee, ook bek­end als Empress Messen­jah, is een reg­gae-selec­tress en lokale radiomak­er die op 16-jarige leefti­jd naar Ned­er­land kwam. Haar voedzame, plan­taardi­ge keuken is geïn­spireerd op Rasta­fari Ital en Suri­naamse culi­naire tradities.

Dor­cas is een Ghanese kok die in de buurt van Gein woont. Onlangs is ze haar eigen fam­i­liebedri­jf in cater­ing begonnen, Vis­it Ghana Cuisines, waarmee ze de smaak van Ghana met de wereld wil delen.

Ramzi en Jehad komen uit Gaza, Palesti­na. Min­der dan zes maan­den gele­den kwa­men zij als asiel­zoek­ers naar Ned­er­land. Momenteel wonen ze in een asiel­zoek­er­scen­trum in de Bijlmer. Hun liefde voor eten heeft hen samenge­bracht met andere Gaza­nen om samen te koken en hun culi­naire erf­goed te delen. Via hun kook­groep zoeken ze verbind­ing met de Ned­er­landse samen­lev­ing door eten en tra­di­ties uit hun thuis­land te delen.

Doe op 10 sep­tem­ber met ons mee tij­dens de lancer­ing van Cook­ing of Long­ing: een avond waarin ver­halen wor­den verteld en beluis­terd, recepten wor­den gedeeld en herin­ner­in­gen aan thuis kun­nen wor­den geproefd.

Cook­ing of Long­ing is a sound project by Mex­i­can sound artist and soci­ol­o­gist Eli Guer­rero, explor­ing the con­nec­tion between food, mem­o­ry, and iden­ti­ty. Through immer­sive cook­ing audio-recipes, it cap­tures how flavours and food forge a sense of belong­ing for peo­ple migrat­ing to the Netherlands. 

The series fol­lows 7 cook­ing enthu­si­asts based in Ams­ter­dam Zuidoost as they go in the kitchen to recre­ate the flavours of home. Cre­at­ed from audio record­ings made dur­ing the spring of 2026, the project brings togeth­er the recipes, mem­o­ries, and sto­ries of Luba, Ted­dy, Esther, Don­na Lee, Dor­cas, Ramzi, and Jehad.

The launch

On 10 Sep­tem­ber, we invite you to join us for the launch of the audio series Cook­ing of Long­ing. Dur­ing the evening, you will get a first lis­ten to the recipes and a sneak pre­view of the accom­pa­ny­ing cook­book. And, of course, there will be some­thing to taste too.

Come and expe­ri­ence an evening of sound, food, mem­o­ry, and sto­ries from home.

About the project

Eli Guer­rero (www.eliguerrero.nl) is a Mex­i­can artist work­ing between Mex­i­co and Ams­ter­dam. Her prac­tice focus­es on site-spe­cif­ic and com­mu­ni­ty-based sound projects explor­ing sto­ry­telling, food, iden­ti­ty, and bioa­coustics. She is a mem­ber of the Straten­mak­ers Audio Col­lec­tief in Ams­ter­dam and co-cre­ator of Radio Coci­na Colab­o­ra­to­rio in Mexico. 

Cook­ing of Long­ing grew from Eli’s own expe­ri­ence of migra­tion. Ams­ter­dam Zuidoost was her first home in the Nether­lands, a place where she encoun­tered a com­mu­ni­ty of peo­ple with sim­i­lar expe­ri­ences: look­ing to recre­ate the flavours they miss from home. The project fea­tures those culi­nary encoun­ters hap­pen­ing at people’s kitchens. 

The cooks

• Luba is a Mex­i­can artist who migrat­ed to the Nether­lands with her fam­i­ly in 2016. She has since lived in Kraai­ennest, nav­i­gat­ing Dutch life while redis­cov­er­ing her pas­sion for food.
• Ted­dy Lyon is a South African heal­er, artist, and activist who has lived in the Nether­lands for 12 years. He found a home in Reigers­bos, where he loves to cook and share meals with friends.
• Esther, orig­i­nal­ly from Curaçao has lived in the Nether­lands for 40 years. Her home near Ganzen­hof is a famil­iar gath­er­ing place for fam­i­ly and friends who come for a taste of authen­tic Antil­lean Cre­ole food.
• Don­na Lee, also known as Empress Messen­jah, is a reg­gae selec­tress and local radio host who came to the Nether­lands at the age of 16. Her nutri­tious plant-based cook­ing draws on Rasta­fari Ital and Suri­namese food traditions.
• Dor­cas is a Ghana­ian cook liv­ing near Gein. She recent­ly start­ed her own fam­i­ly-run cater­ing busi­ness, Vis­it Ghana Cuisines, through which she hopes to share a taste of Ghana with the world.
• Ramzi and Jehad are from Gaza, Pales­tine. They came to the Nether­lands less than six months ago as asy­lum seek­ers and cur­rent­ly live in an asy­lum cen­tre in Bijlmer. Their love of food has brought them togeth­er with oth­er Gazans to cook and share their culi­nary her­itage. Through their cook­ing group, they seek to con­nect with Dutch soci­ety by shar­ing food and tra­di­tions from home.
